The ShineOnCass Lending Library opened in March, 2021 at the Alfond Youth & Community Center in Waterville, Maine! The community “Little Free Library” shines a light on youth literacy and puts books into the hands of more than 350 children who attend the after school care program at the Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCA at the AYCC.
Children are welcome to select a book of their choice to borrow, read it at home or at the club, and either return it, or share a different book by replacing it with one of their own. The ShineOnCass Foundation designed, created and donated the 6-foot, bright yellow, floating sun bookcase to hold hundreds of lending books.
Cassidy was an avid, lifelong reader. Her love for books began before she could even read the words in them! What better way to honor her, than to share that passion with other children!
The lending library shelves will be filled with a variety of age-appropriate books provided by the AYCC. The ShineOnCass Foundation donated a collection of books promoting kindness, inclusion and diversity, as well as children’s books that address childhood grief and isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also added some special book selections from Cassidy's large collection of favorite books.
Plus, as an official "Little Free Library" the new ShineOnCass Lending Library is now part of a worldwide registry. Charter #113015!
