The first ShineOnCass Lending Library opened in March, 2021 at the Alfond Youth & Community Center in Waterville, Maine! The community “Little Free Library” shines a light on youth literacy and puts books into the hands of more than 350 children who attend the after school care program at the Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCA at the AYCC.
A second ShineOnCass Library opened four years later in March, 2025 at Kennebec Valley YMCA in Augusta, where hundreds of children attending the club every year have access to free books.
Children are welcome to select a book of their choice to borrow, read it at home or at the club, and either return it, or share a different book by replacing it with one of their own. The ShineOnCass Foundation designed, created and donated these 6-foot, bright yellow, floating sun bookcase to hold hundreds of lending books.
Cassidy was an avid, lifelong reader. Her love for books began before she could even read the words in them! What better way to honor her, than to share that passion with other children!
The ShineOnCass Foundation donates a collection of books promoting kindness, inclusion and diversity, as well as children’s books that address childhood grief. We also added some special book selections from Cassidy's large collection of favorite books!
Plus, as an official "Little Free Library" the new ShineOnCass Lending Library is now part of a worldwide registry.
